Philco Refrigerator Serial Number Lookup

Determine the nominal size from the model number. The good news is that most HVAC manufacturers make it easy to determine the nominal capacity of your air conditioner. It’s in the model number. Go outside and find the outdoor unit, that metal noisemaker hidden away on the side or the back of the house. On these pages I have listed numerous photos of USA Philco home sets built from 1928 through 1960. The gallery pages are broken down by calendar year though 1934; model year from 1935 on. Philco did not observe 'model years' until June 1934, which marked the introduction of their 1935 model lineup.

For newcomers to the hobby and seasoned radio collectors not familiar with Philco, this handy chart will help identify parts and also disspell a recurring mistake in identifying Philco radio model numbers. Up until 1937, Philco used 2 and 3-digit model numbers, not counting any suffixes to denote cabinet styles. Hence, we have models like 20, 16, 80, 610, 680 and the like. Starting in 1937, Philco changed their numbering scheme to include the last two digits of the model’s production year. So, the “new” models for the 1937 model year were 37-10, 37-610, 37-89 and so forth. Philco kept this scheme up to the end of radio and television production.

As you will notice, Philco’s parts numbering scheme is very extensive and also has some numbers that appear to be just like model numbers from 1937 to 1945. Not so! These numbers all have 4-digit sequences and, to the untrained eye, look just like model numbers. This is where the confusion sets in, especially with Printed Matter that has a prefix of 39-xxxx.

Many newcomers mistake these small printed numbers to be the model numbers, but actually are the part numbers for the paper tags themselves! Sometimes that’s all that’s left of a destroyed or torn model number tag. Other part numbers would also be ink-stamped or metal stamped into chassis, sub-assemblies and other parts causing more confusion in finding a model number on a new set. Hopefully this chart will help clear things up.

Two-digit prefix numbers are assigned to various classes of parts, sub-assemblies, and assemblies which are encountered in radio manufacturing. Each part number under this system consists of the two-digit prefix plus a four-digit part number. In writing the numbers a hyphen is placed between the two-digit prefix and the four-digit suffix. This part numbering system was started approximately January1, 1933, and all new PHILCO part numbers have been assigned in accordance with the new system. Wherever part numbers have previously been assigned, however, the older numbers are still employed.

The following are the various classifications under this later system:

Purchasing an older home with an existing furnace can be a worry; a furnace often needs replacing after 15 to 20 years, so knowing its age is helpful in determining if a new furnace should be in the budget. Newer units may have a manufacturer's date listed somewhere on the furnace; older furnaces require a bit more digging by looking at the serial number, which tells the manufacturer various pieces of information, including the age. Finding the serial number, however, may also require a bit of sleuth work.

  1. Pull off the removable door on the outside of your furnace; this is usually along the bottom of the front of the unit. Look at the interior of the metal door for a label or tag listing the furnace's serial number. This may also show an actual manufacturer's date, depending on the company that made the furnace.

  2. Turn off the power to the furnace -- by either turning off the power switch or the master fuse to the unit -- and look at the fan and fan blades. Older furnaces sometimes had the serial number stamped onto the fan itself, giving the necessary information even when a manufacturing label is absent.

  3. Look at the first four digits of the serial number once you find it. The first two digits can be the week of the year that the unit was manufactured, with the third and fourth number indicating the year. A serial number starting with 0193, for example, may have been made the first week of 1993.

  4. Look for a sticker or tag that gives a date when the furnace was last serviced. This is usually common on gas furnaces and may list the date that the furnace was installed. This can often give a close approximation of the unit's age.

  5. Call the manufacturer to get the age of the furnace. Even without a serial number, a manufacturer's rep may be able to look at a picture of the unit to give an idea of the period in which it was manufactured. If the company is out of business, having a home inspector or heating contractor look over the unit may be worth any fee charged to do so.

  6. Tip

A furnace with ductwork fanning out that resembles an octopus is a 'gravity' furnace, dating pre-1950.
